Aventis Prize for Science Writing

JUNIOR PRIZE SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED

Winner! DK Guide to the Human Body by Richard Walker | Hardcover

Einstein, dinosaurs, bugs and the human body are among the subjects covered in the shortlist for the Junior Prize of the Aventis Prizes for Science Books 2002.

The shortlist of six books for under-14s was chosen from among 65 entries by a five-strong judging panel chaired by Dr John Ashworth, the former Chairman of the Board of the British Library.

Dr Ashworth and the panel now hand over the judging process to young people from all over the UK. For the first time this year, the Aventis Prizes have teamed up with Sci-Zmic - the new national network for science clubs, and children aged up to fourteen from 30 science clubs will have the task of selecting the winning book - the book judged to be best at bringing science alive for children.

The shortlisted books for the Prize are:

Life Finds it’s Feet by Jacqui Bailey | The Dawn of Life (US Title) Hardcover | Paperback

The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia by David Burnie | Hardcover

Dead Famous: Albert Einstein and His Inflatable Universe by Mike Goldsmith UK Paperback

Mega Bites: Bugs by Christopher Maynard UK Paperback

The Usborne Internet-Linked Library of Science: Materials by Alastair Smith, Phillip Clarke & Corinne Henderson | Hardcover | Paperback

DK Guide to the Human Body by Richard Walker | Hardcover

The winner will be announced at a gala awards dinner for the Junior and General Prizes at the Science Museum, London on Tuesday, 25 June 2002. Each prize is worth £10,000 to the winning authors and £1,000 to each of the other shortlisted authors.

The Prizes, now in their 14th year, aim to encourage the writing, publishing and reading of good and accessible popular science books. They are organized by Copus - The Science Communication Partnership, and sponsored by Aventis Pharma Ltd - a world leader in pharmaceuticals.
