Whitbread Book AwardsWinners: Book of the Year | First Novel | Novel | Poetry | Biography | Children's Book | 2002 At the heart of the philosophy of the Whitbread Book Awards, established in 1971, is their commitment to select well-written British books that people will enjoy. The Whitbread is one of the longest-running and most prestigious book awards in the UK. Since its launch in 1971, its structure has evolved; but it’s never diverted from its original ethos of identifying and celebrating some of the most enjoyable books published in the UK each year across a number of different genres. There are six awards in total – five category awards (First Novel | Novel | Poetry | Biography | Children's Book) and, from these, one overall winner – the Whitbread Book of the Year. 2002 Whitbread Book Awards Novel: Spies by Michael Frayn | Hardcover | Paperback First Novel Award: The Song of Names by Norman Lebrecht | Poetry: The Ice Age by Paul Farley | Paperback Biography: Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self by Claire Tomalin | Hardcover Whitbread Children's Book Award: Saffy's Angel by Hilary McKay | Hardcover | Audio Cassette The total prize fund is £50,000: each of the category award winners receives £5,000, and the overall winner receives a further £25,000.
