Nestle Smarties Prize

The Nestlé Smarties Prize, since 1994, has been awarded by the Youth Libraries Group to the most outstanding book published in the UK. There are three age categories, 0-5, 6-8 and 9-11, and in each category there are three winners, Gold, Silver and Bronze. The books are judged by a panel of 5 adult judges who draw up a shortlist of three titles for each category. The winners are then chosen by young judges selected from 60 classes from schools all over the country. These judges have themselves won the Nestlé Smarties Prize competition to provide the most imaginative reviews of the shortlisted titles. The chosen schools judge the category relevant to their age. The three books in each category will now be judged by a panel of children. The gold medal winners are announced in November.
