Background on the Indie Awards

The Independent e-Book Awards were created in September of 2000 as the result of a collaboration between Sunny Ross, founder and executive director of the Digital Literature Institute and editor-in-chief of Mystic-Ink, one of the first online communities for readers and writers, and M. J. Rose, author of Lip Service, the first e-book discovered online by the mainstream publishing industry. Ross and Rose created the Indie Awards as a way to recognize and reward outstanding work from authors with independent publishers and self-published authors in the new world of digital literature.

Works that were electronically published between December 1, 2000 and November 30, 2001 were eligible for the 2002 e-Book Awards and the Favorite e-Book category for the Reader's Choice Awards. The work was not required for purchase by the public, but it must be available for viewing (in whole or in part) on the Internet or as a downloadable format. While each work must have been originally contracted or published in electronic format, the work may also have been published as a print and/or audio book as secondary distribution options.
