The awards are named for Anthony Boucher (1911 - 1968), considered the foremost mystery critic in his time.  Boucher helped found the organization Mystery Writers of America.  Mr. Boucher was also the author of several novels.

Best Writer of the Century: Agatha Christie Agatha Christie A to Z : The Essential Reference to Her Life and Writings | Hardcover

The World Mystery Convention, called the Bouchercon, is also named in honor of Anthony Boucher.  The first was held at Santa Monica, California, in 1970.
