Children's LaureateFor Updates Visit Literature-Awards.com Author Anne Fine has been named as the second Children's Laureate for her lifetime's contribution in writing. She has previously won the Carnegie Medal (1989 Goggle-eyes | Paperback (book & cassette) | Audio Cassette | Large Print), the Guardian Children's Literature Award, the Whitbread Children's Award and the Smarties Prize.
Ms Fine will take over the role from Quentin Blake, the previous (and first) Children's Laureate. Quentin Blake has illustrated more than 100 books. The Children's Laureate is awarded to an eminent living British writer or illustrator of children's books (biennially) both to celebrate a lifetime's achievement and to spotlight the role of children's book creators in making the readers of the future. The laureateship was the idea of the children's novelist Michael Morpurgo. Poet Laureate Ted Hughes was patron of the award until his death. This year's judging panel included journalist Mark Lawson, Quentin Blake and children's book critic Julia Eccleshare. The judging panel is assisted by input from various schoolchildren throughout the UK. The schools are part of the 'Children's Laureate Group'. They give their own recommendations and votes after reading the nominated authors works. Twenty one schools are chosen to participate in the voting process. The Children's Laureate receives £10,000, and the task of stimulating public discussion about the importance of children's literature and reading to a forward-looking society.
