The Carnegie Medal This award, established in 1936 in honor of Andrew Carnegie, is given for recognition of an outstanding book for children and young adult readers, written in English and first published in the United Kingdom during the previous year. There are 13 children's librarians from The Library Association Youth Libraries Group who make up the Carnegie judging panel. It was first won by Arthur Ransome in 1936, and has since been won by many of the great names in children's literature, including C. S. Lewis, Eleanor Farjeon and Anne Fine. The announcement is made at an award ceremony in July at Imperial College as part of Under The Covers, a major conference celebrating children's books and libraries.
