The GLBTRT was founded in 1970 as the Task Force on Gay Liberation. They are considered to be the nation's first gay, lesbian & bisexual professional organization. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table Awards are given to the best books with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgendered themes. Each year the GLBTRT bestows two book awards: one for literature, one for non-fiction. The Inaugural GLBTRT Award was given to Isabel Miller's Patience and Sarah (Paperback still in print!) in 1971. Since then, a total of forty-four books have been honored for exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered experience. The awards winners receive a plaque and a monetary prize.
