New York City Book Awards

New York City Book Awards 2002

Award for History: Diana Dizerega Wall and Anne-Marie E. Cantwell for Unearthing Gotham: The Archaeology of New York City | Hardcover

Award for History: Tyler Anbinder for Five Points: The 19th-century New York City Neighborhood that Invented Tap Dance, Stole Elections, and Became the World's Most Notorious Slum | Hardcover

Children's Book Award: Robert Burleigh for Lookin' for Bird in the Big City | Hardcover

New York has been the inspiration of many books, from those of Washington Irving, Edith Wharton and Henry James to Marianne Moore, E. B. White and Tom Wolfe. The award was established in 1996 by New York Society Library to honor books which capture the essence of the city. The award is given to a book of literary or artistic quality about New York City or any aspect of it which evokes the city's spirit or catches its essence. The book can be art or photography, poetry or prose, fiction or non-fiction, biography, history, natural history, economics, children's literature or anything else. It is not necessary that the city be the major subject of the book, but it must play an essential invigorating role beyond that of mere setting. How to Contact The New York Society Library.

The Awards winners are announced in April.
