Bad Sex in Fiction Awards 2002 Wendy Perriam has won the tenth annual Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Award for a passage in her novel, depicting pin-striped sex, Tread Softly | Hardcover For Updates Visit Literature-Awards.com The winning passage: "Weirdly, he was clad in pin-stripes at the same time as being naked. Pin-stripes were erotic, the uniform of fathers, two-dimensional fathers. Even Mr. Hughes's penis had a seductive pin-striped foreskin." Wendy Perriam, who has been nominated for the prize three times in a row, said that she was "stunned but pleased" by her win, insisting that the winning scene had been intended to be humorous. Even literature awards have their lighter side (or dark side, dependent upon your view). The most dreaded of British literary prizes is considered by some to be the Bad Sex in Fiction Award. The honor (ahem) was created by The Literary Review for the worst, most redundant or embarrassing description of physical joining, in a novel. Past winners of the award include TV arts presenter Melvyn Bragg, Nicholas Royle and Philip Kerr. A. A. Gill proudly displayed his literary 'prowess' on his books covers.
