Dr Raj Persaud, chair of the General Prize judging panel, commented on the
judges' decision: "This book made a real effort to enliven the subject through
readable text The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen Hawking
The winner of the Junior Prize is the DK Guide to the Human Body by Richard Walker - the third consecutive win for the publisher. The shortlist was selected by judging panel chaired by Dr John Ashworth, former chairman of the British Library. The selection of the winning book was made by young judges at 30 science clubs in the sci-Zmic network. Commenting on the DK Guide to the Human Body, Emma, age 12 said: "A good reference book and also appealing to read anyway - brilliant." authors, the judges, and judging process and The Aventis Prizes are organized jointly by COPUS and the Science Museum. The aim to encourage the writing, publishing and reading of popular science books. Sponsored by Aventis, the international life sciences company, the awards have a total prize of £30,000. The Aventis Awards are regarded as one of the major book awards. Popular science books for older readers are considered for the General Prize, worth £10,000. Science books for younger readers (under 14) are eligible for the Junior Prize, also worth £10,000. The shortlists are announced in March/April and the Prizes are awarded to the winning authors at a ceremony at the Science Museum in May/June of each year Aventis Prizes for Science Books
